It feeds a crowd and the leftovers are almost as exciting as the main event! I usually make a classic glazed ham in the oven, but this slow cooker ham came about during one of those busy holiday cooking days when every inch of oven space was already spoken for.

Instead of competing with casseroles, dinner rolls, and scalloped potatoes for oven time, the ham gently warms in the slow cooker while everything else bakes away. Even better, it cooks in its own juices, so the meat stays incredibly tender and flavorful.

Since most hams at the grocery store are already fully cooked, all you really need to do is heat it through. Just plan on the right size ham for your guest list and let the slow cooker do the rest. And don’t skip the glaze—it’s sweet, tangy, and made with a splash of soda that gives it that shiny, sticky finish everyone loves.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Step 1
In a small saucepan, heat the brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, and 1/2 cup soda until the sugar is melted and the mixture is bubbly. Reduce the heat and simmer until thick, 7 to 8 minutes.
  2. Step 2
Pour the remaining soda into a 6-quart slow cooker. Stud the ham in several places with the cloves, then place the ham in the slow cooker. Brush the ham with 1/4 cup of the glaze (refrigerate the remaining glaze until ready to use). Cover the slow cooker and cook on low until the ham is hot throughout, 5 to 6 hours.
  3. Step 3
A few minutes before the ham is ready, reheat the remaining glaze until warmed, about 3 minutes. Remove the ham from the slow cooker and brush with the remaining glaze. Carve the ham.
